U.S. Home Price Recovery Prospects

The U.S. housing market has been a focus for policymakers since the Great Recession, with central bankers hoping a renewed housing “wealth effect” might be a useful transmission for spurring economic growth. In line with our home price growth upturn call in early 2012, U.S. home price growth had begun to strengthen after years of waning. Then in March, before taper-talk emerged, we warned of slower home price growth ahead, and recently, fears have crept back into the mainstream that the home price recovery will fade away. Given the crosscurrents in various housing data, where are prices actually headed?

ECRI’s latest report reviews the underlying drivers of home price growth captured in our Leading Home Price Index, indicating whether prices will continue to rise, or falter in the months ahead.
