Prospects for Australian Commodity Exports

Last month, Australia and China signed a trade agreement that would open the Chinese market to Australian farm and service-sector exports. This marks an important step towards diversifying away from commodity exports, which currently account for the majority of Australia’s exports, not only to China but overall.

The ongoing decline in commodity prices does not bode well for Australian exports. However, since demand for these commodities depends largely on the global industrial cycle, ECRI’s International Leading Manufacturing Index already provides important insights about Australian export prospects for the coming months.
