Commodity Prices Distorted by External Factors

The recent drop in industrial commodity prices created unease in the markets, sounding alarms over a global growth slowdown that we warned of four months ago. While there is a confluence of factors causing the weakness in industrial commodity prices, exogenous causes may have introduced significant distortions.

Our Journal of Commerce-ECRI Industrial Price Index (JoC-ECRI IPI) can be separated into exchange-traded and non-exchange-traded sub-indexes that highlight this issue. ECRI’s latest analysis of the JoC-ECRI IPI determines how much distortion has been introduced into commodity prices.
