Weekly Leading Index Rises

A leading index of the U.S. economy rose in the latest week.

The Economic Cycle Research Institute, an independent forecasting group, said its weekly leading index (WLI) rose to to 133.5 in the week ended Dec. 24 compared with 133.0 in the previous week.

The index's annualized growth rate, which smooths out weekly fluctuations, rose to 1.3 percent from 0.9 percent in the prior week.

"The rise in the weekly leading index is becoming more persistent and points to a resilient economic expansion through most of 2005," said Lakshman Achuthan, managing director of ECRI.
