Now that the U.S. economy is in a recession, the question on most people's minds is whether it will at least be a short and shallow one. Notably, due to prolonged pessimism about the economy, businesses have slashed inventories, potentially weakening the inventory cycle downturn that provided much of the impetus behind past recessions. Does that automatically imply that the current recession is going to be mild?
